As businesses nationwide cancel or move internships online, American Landmark is expanding its hands-on program for college students interested in real estate careers
American Landmark Apartments, one of the fastest-growing multifamily owner-operators in the country, is expanding its internship program for college students exploring careers in real estate or property management. The part-time internship program, which launched earlier this year with eight students from Florida and Texas colleges, recently expanded into Atlanta, Georgia and will soon be accepting students in other states where American Landmark owns properties, including North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The expansion of the internship program comes as many companies are cancelling or scaling back internships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to data from job site Glassdoor, over half of summer internships in the U.S. were cancelled due to the pandemic this year.
Bucking the trend, American Landmark is scaling up its program to ensure students receive valuable, hands-on professional experience in an otherwise challenging economic climate – particularly students from minority or marginalized communities, which are presently under-represented in the real estate industry at large. As part of a broader initiative to promote diversity, American Landmark is stepping up its current recruitment and internship activities at historically black colleges and universities.
“Careers in multi-family property management can be deeply rewarding, both personally and financially,” said Daniel Looft, Director of Talent Acquisition at American Landmark. “With so many students and graduates losing out on valuable experiences to learn and gain new skills this year, our team felt it was necessary to make an even bigger commitment to recruiting and training the next generation of real estate professionals, while adhering to social distancing and safety protocols at all our properties.”
Added Joe Lubeck, CEO of American Landmark, “We’re firm believers in promoting from within, providing our team members with professional advancement opportunities, and ensuring a diverse and equitable workplace. Diversity is our strength, and our internship program allows us to actively pursue and perpetuate those values by giving people of all backgrounds an opportunity to explore a rewarding career in the field.”
This Spring’s cohort of interns included students attending University of Texas, Texas A&M University, Morehouse College, University of Tampa, Kennesaw State University, the University of Florida, Valencia College, many more.
“My internship with American Landmark has been very informative about the multifamily industry,” said Ashlyn Watts, a recent University of North Texas graduate who majored in real estate who is presently interning at 4 Corners Apartments in Frisco, Texas. “Thanks to the amazing team at 4 Corners, I have been able to learn about all aspects, including leasing, generating/analyzing reports, and sending out renewal offers. The property manager has been an amazing mentor throughout my time here.”
The American Landmark internship is a part-time, paid internship offered year-round, and is open to all college grade levels, graduate students and alumni. With student schedules consistently shifting and evolving during these unprecedented times, students are offered the opportunity to coordinate their own unique work schedules with their teams. Interns work up to 30 hours per week either at a specific apartment property in the company’s portfolio – which includes over 95 communities in metros across the Southeastern U.S., including Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin, Tex.; Atlanta, Ga.; Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and West Palm Beach, Fla.; Savannah, Ga.; Nashville, Tenn; and Raleigh and Charlotte, N.C. As the internship program grows, American Landmark will make internship opportunities available at even more communities in its portfolio.
American Landmark seeks candidates who display a strong interest in learning what it takes to run a multimillion-dollar real estate asset from the site level. Interns will have the opportunity to observe and learn every facet of managing an asset, including property marketing, leasing/sales, operations and financial management. Interns are also given priority consideration for entry-level job opportunities at the company, which offers excellent benefits, professional training, tuition reimbursement and a positive workplace culture.
American Landmark was named to Inc. magazine’s annual list of the Best Workplaces for 2020, and has been named a Best Place to Work by the Tampa Bay Business Journal (2019) and Tampa Bay Times (2020).
