Albizu University’s Miami Campus, a leader in undergraduate and graduate psychology programs, recently held its 12th annual Mental Health Awareness Month educational event, which focused on mental health issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sponsored by Albizu’s Master’s in Psychology program and led by Program Director Dr. Diana Barroso, the annual event focuses on current topics of interest to modern-day practitioners of behavioral health.
The event drew 180 participants representing a broader audience than ever before. It was held virtually due tosocial distancing regulations on gatherings. Current and prospective Albizu students, alumni, and field supervisors were joined by faculty from Albizu University and Miami-Dade College, along with teachers, parents, and mental health providers from around the U.S.
“The virtual format drew an enthusiastic response from an expanded, diverse audience,” said Dr. Tilokie Depoo, chancellor of Albizu University’s Miami Campus. “One of our core beliefs is that mental health is essential to everyone, and so we reach out to the community with events like this one, focused on current behavioral health concerns.”
Tania Diaz, Psy.D, Edward Heyden, Ed.D, YamilaLezcano, LMHC, and Scott Bauer, Psy.D., four distinguished professorsat Albizu University, discussed maintaining mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, including prevention and treatment of emotional and psychological conditions in children and adults, such as bipolar disorder, substance abuse, and eating disorders; and the utility of the pharmacological approach specifically related to mental and behavioral health. Also, during the virtual event, complimentary continuing education units were awarded to licensed professionals in the fields of psychology and nursing as a way to give back to first responders.
