Social Homeschooling Program Launching Nationwide By Space of Mind, a Florida-based Pioneer Mainstreaming Home Education

6/30/20

Educational disruptions due to the COVID upheaval have 40 percent of Americans considering virtual or home schooling options for their kids, according to a recent poll. To help fill this need, Space of Mind Schoolhouse, which pioneered Social HomeschoolingTM over the last 10 years, has expedited the national rollout of its hybrid school program to include virtual, live-taught learning, as well as licensed co-ops and franchised locations for full and part-time school, community and enrichment activities.

The 1st-12th grade college prep curriculum is project-based, experiential and customizable. The program was founded on the principles of home education, but is delivered in a social environment (virtually or in-person), which allows for students to learn in curated groups and through an approach tailored to their needs.

Over the last 10 years, Spaces of Mind graduates have a 100% college acceptance rate with its graduates attending New York University, University of Colorado (Boulder), University of Washington, Florida State University, University of Denver, University of Delaware Honors College, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, New School (Manhattan), New College (Florida), Savannah College of Art and Design, and more.

Space of Mind’s growth campaign proclaims, “everywhere is SOMewhere to learn” and the company is deconstructing the existing and outdated education system by offering more flexibility, customization and community engagement through different school-day options that meet families’ unique lifestyles. Space of Mind’s commitment to introducing more choice to reduce school-related stress includes a variety of private in-home learning, virtual learning and onsite learning options tailored to meet the needs of individual families, groups of families and students, and especially those looking to explore homeschooling as an option. The options include Social HomeschoolingTM full-time, part-time, virtually, or privately through Co-ops with other families. Additionally, Space of Mind can consult with schools and educators on best practices for distance learning.

“Between COVID-19, school shootings, bullying and overall academic stress, many parents and students are looking for a new approach to school,” said Ali Kaufman, founder and CEO of Space of Mind. “The pandemic and its ‘reset’ have changed the way so many people approach their work and lifestyle, and that also impacts their family’s approach to education. We are hearing from families that they are looking for a safe, nurturing and more flexible environment for their kids, whether that’s at home or in a community or schoolhouse setting, without sacrificing rigor and creativity”

Some of the Space of Mind differences include:

  • 3:1 ratio of kids to coaches for on-site academic programs (with individual support also integrated into the program) and no more than a 5:1 ratio for Co-op programming.
  • Individualized Student Coaching Roadmap (assessments, goals and learning plans) that guides a personalized curriculum and allows for the continued measurement and communication of success
  • Vanguard creative arts program that immerses students in their creative passion through social entrepreneurship and service
  • Social, emotional and life skills are taught in conjunction with academics and creativity
  • Exposure to unique wellness and fitness programs, including yoga, meditation, SCUBA, surfing, horseback riding, dance, martial arts, team sports, swimming, dance, circuit training and more

“My daughter Ella has been a student at Space of Mind for more than two years and in that time, I’ve noticed that she’s developed a love for learning that she’s never had before. They looked at her needs and teach to those needs. She’s built up so much confidence in these two years,” said parent Laura Reiss of Boca Raton.

In addition to offering customized programs for all mainstream learners, SOM personalizes its curriculum to additionally serve those with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Visual and Auditory Processing Challenges, Anxiety, Dyslexia, Giftedness and the like. Virtual and live coursework is taught in small groups that are tailored by learning style and social chemistry. Group project-based activities are customized to the individual student by SOM’s curriculum team, and they are delivered and tracked using the Altitude Learning technology platform. All learning activities are based on SOM’s personalized student assessments and the Coaching Roadmap and also include family engagement components to help students showcase their learning in real-world applications at home and in the community. Additionally, measurements against any state’s standards, student and coach created goals and character habits are also tracked to determine a student’s growth in all 21st century-ready skills. Private and group coaching, homeschool and afterschool study halls, enrichment activities, field trips, community events and parent support is also available.

In addition to traditional academics delivered in a non-traditional way, Space of Mind offers a host of live and online camps and ongoing virtual classes and workshops for children, adults and families in multiple disciplines, including visual arts, music, theater, engineering, culinary arts, gardening, science, technology, entrepreneurship, meditation, yoga, fitness, wellness, social skills, leadership, debate and community service. Private and group coaching is also available to improve attention, organization and anxiety management skills for all ages. Post-high school students can also participate in Gap Year programming, receive college admissions support and prepare for the workforce.
