The decennial U.S. Census determines how many congressional seats each state gets and helps inform the distribution of $1.50 trillion in federal funding this year. In a new study, SmartAsset analyzed data to find the states and major U.S. cities with the highest 2020 Census response rates as of May 4, 2020. We also uncovered the locations with the highest percentage of respondents who have taken advantage of the new online response option introduced this year.

Out of the 50 most-populous U.S. cities, San Diego has the ninth-highest response rate. About 63.3% of households in San Diego had completed their Census questionnaires as of May 4, 2020.
