SoFIA’s board chair Lynn Brewer takes additional leadership role

South Florida Institute on Aging (SoFIA), a non-profit dedicated to bettering the socio-economic lives of South Florida’s aging community, has announced the appointment of Lynn Brewer as interim president and chief executive officer. Brewer, who became board chair of SoFIA in 2018 after serving as board vice chair, has been instrumental in leading SoFIA’s expansion and developing the organization’s new mission, vision and strategic direction.

“I am excited to work with our board, staff and volunteers to continue taking this great organization to the next level by introducing new innovative opportunities to help South Florida seniors achieve socio-economic well-being,” said Brewer. “With passion, enthusiasm and creativity we are bringing fresh ideas and programs to life for older adults. I am proud to expand my work with this team as we amplify a positive message of aging throughout our communities.”

Brewer has more than 25 years of experience in public accounting and has comprehensive experience consulting, speaking and mentoring on tax compliance and reporting issues. She also is an Enrolled Agent (EA) authorized to practice before the Internal Revenue Service. She graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a degree in accounting and is a member of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

During Brewer’s tenure as board chair, SoFIA has launched many new initiatives to close the socio-economic gap and improve the lives of older adults, including:

  • initiating a widely popular senior technology training program, SoFIA Tech, to improve and enhance social and civic engagement;
  • partnering with SAGE, a national advocacy and services organization for LGBT elders, to launch new services for South Florida’s LGBT elders; and
  • piloting SoFIA Fellows, a program that allows retired adults to return to the nonprofit workforce to seek purpose and additional income through training and internships.

In addition, SoFIA has worked to engage leading South Florida businesses through exciting, new partnerships. SoFIA has also been the recipient of several distinguished local and national grants, which continue to help expand its work on behalf of older adults across South Florida.

For more than 55 years, SoFIA has provided innovative services tailored to meet seniors’ caregiving and respite, civic engagement and economic security needs. Visit www.theSoFIA.org for more information.
