Hundreds gathered to celebrate aspiring local teen designers as they debuted their handmade garments made out of recycled materials during the New York-style 14th Annual Young At Art Museum Recycled Fashion Show. The show was hosted by Miami Fashion Week founder Beth Sobel and noteworthy judges included 2019 Project Runway winner Sebastian Grey, Julian Chang, Viviana Gabeiras and Paulette Livingston from FPL. With 100% of net proceeds benefiting YAA’s community initiatives that serve low-income children, families and at-risk teen girls, the Recycled Fashion Show features the designs of students from local schools as well as teen girls from PACE Center Broward that participate in YAA’s Girls ‘N Power gender-empowerment program. Promising teen designers choose a famous visual artist and an environmental issue as the premise and inspiration for the design of their garment. They research an environmental issue that they are passionate about and interpret the issue visually through the use of recyclable materials and the aesthetic of the artist they choose. The challenge is to create a wearable piece that is made of 75% recycled materials. Designers spend an average of 70+ hours creating their garments under the mentorship and guidance of YAA’s Teaching Artist team led by Sue Aguilera, YAA’s Teaching Coordinator. Teens receive service hours for the time they dedicate towards their original creations.
