Mizuki Hashimoto of Japan and Andrey Borges of Brazil edge out competition to win the prestigious title

The Biltmore Hotel,a national historic landmark and luxury hotel in the heart of Coral Gables, congratulates the winners of the 56th annual Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship – Mizuki Hashimoto of Japan and Andrey Borges of Brazil. From January 2nd – 6th the best girls and boys amateur golfers from nearly 100 countries across the globe competed for the 2020 Junior Orange Bowl title.

As it has been in the tournament’s history, the competition was tight until the very end. Hashimoto had a tree-stroke lead into the 18th hole, but a wild drive that hit a tree gave her a distance penalty. After she hit an accurate drive and putt, she captured the title by two strokes over Luci Malchirand of France. On the boys’ side, Borges came to the final hole tied for the lead. He made a birdie on the par-5 to edge Jose Luis Ballester of Spain by one stroke.

“Congratulations to Mizuki Hashimoto and Andrey Borges for their terrific accomplishment, said Bob Coman, Director of Golf at the Biltmore Hotel. “We are proud to have hosted this year’s crop of future champion golfers as they launch their careers here with us at The Biltmore.”

The Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship is one of 15 athletic, artistic and cultural events that make up the Junior Orange Bowl International Youth Festival, which celebrated its 70th anniversary last year. The festival draws more than 7,500 youth participants to South Florida’s community each year.

The Biltmore is on the heels of celebrating the completion of a $35-million property-wide renovation including to its 1925 Donald Ross-designed 18-hole, par-71 golf course. In January 2019, The Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship was the first tournament held on the revamped Biltmore layout. As one of only nine Donald Ross designed golf courses in the top-100 golf courses in the U.S., veteran golf course architect Brian Silva oversaw the restoration project; which included new Bermuda grass on tees, fairways & greens, incorporating new bunkers, enhancing both the short-game practice as well as range areas, establishing challenging signature holes, and extending the overall course length to more than 7,100 yards making it ideal for championship level play.

The Biltmore Hotel is also home to The Jim McLean Golf School, which offers a variety of golf instruction experiences, including corporate clinics, junior programs, private lessons and multi-day golf schools. Since the school's inception in 1991, the school has firmly established itself as the #1 Golf School in America.
