Plantation resident Aven Roberts is named Education Volunteer of the Year
The Broward Center for the Performing Arts recently honored its volunteers who donate their time to one of the largest arts-in-education programs in the United States, which serves more than 130,000 students annually.
Plantation resident Aven Roberts, who has volunteered at the Broward Center for 13 years, was named Education Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding and dedicated service to the children of Broward County. As ushers for the Student Enrichment in the Arts program, the Broward Center’s volunteer corps makes it possible for the students of Broward County to enjoy free performances throughout the school year. And these volunteers also provide administrative support in the Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center to ensure that evening and weekend programs run smoothly. More than 3.3 million students have passed through the doors of the Broward Center since 1991 when the Center opened, and the number of programs continues to grow.
Many of the programs are presented in partnership with Broward County Public Schools. Among those attending the luncheon to thank the volunteers were School Board Members Ann Murray and Heather Brinkworth, Director of Athletics and Student Activities Shawn Cerra, Chief Portfolio Services Officer Leslie Brown, Executive Director of Early Learning Language Acquisition Lori Canning, Director of Elementary Learning Nicole Mancini and Community Relations Coordinator for Broward Technical Colleges Lynn Goldman.
Broward Center President and CEO Kelley Shanley noted the Broward Center’s education offerings increase academic achievement for students of the sixth largest school district in the country.
Advanced musical theater student Sadie Barton, who will star in the Music Theatre International pilot production of Matilda JR, and Michelle Sandler, who takes the advanced adult singing class at the Broward Center, performed for the guests.
Volunteers and guests who attended the luncheon in the Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom at the Broward Center enjoyed meals prepared and served by students from the culinary arts department of McFatter Technical College.
