Free Outdoor Monthly Series in North Miami

What/Who: Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to present Mojo Ike and Val as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. GRAMMY-nominated artists Mojo Ike and Val Woods completed their most recent CD, “Movin’ Up,” after returning from an 18-city European Tour where they electrified audiences with high energy yet soulful Blues performances.

The Miami-based blues duo has performed throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. In 2007 the Ike and Val Woods Blues Band competed and won first place at the Monterey Blues Festival’s “Battle of the Bands.” They have shared the stage with Buddy Guy, Gill Scott, Ramsey Lewis, KEM, Jerry Butler, Jeffrey Osborne, Bobby Blue Bland, the Whispers, Tommy Castro, Eddie Cotton Jr., Jonathan Butler, David Sanborne, Earl Klugh, Betty Wright, Nestor Torres, the Ruppingtons, Pancho Sanchez and the O’Jays. Mojo Ike and Val will begin their performance at 8 p.m., rain or shine.

Prior to the performance, guests and their families are invited to enjoy a “Family Fun” event from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. outside of MOCA’s Pavilion Gallery where they can participate in a free arts and crafts project. Guests will get a preview for the upcoming MOCA Mini Makers, which is held the first Saturday of every month from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. for children ages 6 – 12. The event is first come, first serve and supplies are limited.

Guests may also enjoy MOCA’s groundbreaking exhibition “AFRICOBRA: Messages to the People,” celebrating the Chicago-based AFRICOBRA collective, in conjunction with the group’s 50th anniversary by donation from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. during Jazz at MOCA. AFRICOBRA’s visual language is defined by the use of text, bright "Coolade" colors, dynamic, gestural markings, and raw, emotive, celebratory images of confident black figures. This historic exhibition will explore the founders’ individual careers and the artists who exhibited with them between 1968-1973 as well as how AFRICOBRA’s philosophy manifested into their works as a group. The exhibition will be on display through April 7.
