National School Breakfast Week Promotes Broward County Public Schools’ Free Universal Breakfast with Fun-Filled Events

From March 4-8, Broward County Public Schools Food & Nutrition Services will celebrate National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) to encourage more students to take advantage of the healthy breakfast choices available through Broward Schools’ free universal breakfast program. This year’s theme “Start Your Engines With School Breakfast” will feature fun-filled District-wide student activities and events to promote the importance of healthy eating.

Eating a nutritious meal provides students with an energizing way to start their school day. During the week, students will receive a variety of school breakfast items each day, such as lemon blueberry scones, chicken slider & biscuits, yogurt, French toast sticks and more. Broward County Public Schools NSBW activities include:

NSBW coloring and activity sheets will be available during breakfast for students to learn more about the importance of eating a healthy breakfast every morning.

High school students will be encouraged to post about their participation on social media with the hashtags #PowerUp, #NSBW19 and their school name. High school students who participate will be entered in a contest to receive one NFL jersey of a team of their choice.

Students can participate in an art coloring contest based on the “Start Your Engines With School Breakfast” theme. Students will be encouraged to creatively display their knowledge of good nutrition and school breakfast. Teachers will send participating students’ artwork to the District for random selection of a winner. One elementary student and one middle school student will receive a Family Membership Pass to the Museum of Discovery and Science with IMAX movie passes.

Elementary and middle school students who participate in National School Breakfast Week will have the opportunity to win daily prizes.

“National School Breakfast Week is the great time to remind our students and parents of all the healthy options we’re serving every day in our schools for free,” said Darlene Moppert, Program Manager of BCPS Food and Nutrition Services. “With this year’s ‘Start Your Engines With School Breakfast’ theme and many fun-filled activities planned, we are looking forward to raising awareness of the important role that school breakfast programs play in student achievement.”

The USDA regulates what is served in schools, mandating the offering of appropriate servings of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and high-quality proteins. Vendors provide the latest new products and BCPS registered dietitians review the nutritional stats for the products and new recipes.
