Dr. Irwin Ruback says he “pestered” his brother, Sandy, and wife, Judie, to move to Devonshire at PGA National, an Erickson Living retirement community located in Palm Beach Gardens and situated on a scenic 28-acre campus on the grounds of prestigious PGA National. But to Sandy, it simply came across as genuine enthusiasm. And it worked. Sandy and Judie saw the convenient, vibrant lifestyle they were enjoying and moved to Devonshire just five months after Irwin and Nancy.

The brothers, who had a typical childhood, grew apart once they pursued their careers—Sandy as a leather and synthetics supplier and eventually partner at NINE WEST, and Irwin as a physician.

He and Nancy had built a house in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; Sandy and Judie an hour away in Highland Beach, yet they rarely saw each other. “Our contacts consisted mostly of family affairs such as weddings,” Irwin says.

Yet, as they got older, they realized the importance of family. When they began to tire of caring for a home, repairs, and landscaping, “We began to explore the idea of moving to an independent living community,” Irwin says.

“We investigated many in the area and came to the conclusion that Devonshire has the most to offer. Who can pass up five restaurants, a resort style pool, a fitness center, a Performing Arts Center and so much more?” he continues.

Those amenities were his argument to Sandy and Judie, who saw the benefits of having so much just outside their front door. “Devonshire offers us a lifestyle of convenience and activities that we find exceptional,” says Sandy. “It’s an all-encompassing lifestyle.”

Plus now, instead of only seeing each other once or twice a year, the couples play cards together twice weekly and enjoy dinners and family time together. “Living close affords us the opportunity to see each other more often,” Sandy says.

“We love seeing families coming together at Devonshire,” says Sales Director Kathy McCrossin. “It adds to our family atmosphere on campus and truly makes Devonshire a great place to live.”
