After another record-setting year in ticket sales, Culture Shock Miami Presents is proud to announce its 2018-2019 season, which includes an eclectic range of theatrical performances available for $5 to teens and young adults ages 13 to 22.

Launched in 2004, Culture Shock Miami provides a showcase of cultural destinations to teenagers and young adults by offering access at an affordable price point. The program also allows participants to purchase a second ticket for $5 for a person of any age. Tickets are available through www.cultureshockmiami.com.

Culture Shock Miami, the young audience development program of Miami-Dade County’s Department of Cultural Affairs, is designed to support the next generation of audience members by providing affordable access to live arts and cultural experiences at the age when they are beginning to make their own decisions about entertainment options. As participants access these cultural experiences through Culture Shock Miami, they are likely to view the arts as a primary entertainment option.

Culture Shock Miami Presents’ 2018-2019 season will include three unique and riveting performances: Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom, Mayumana: Currents, and In To America. These selections are contemporary and engaging, while showcasing historical issues that are still relevant today. In addition to evening performances for the general public, free daytime performances will be available to middle and high school students in collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Cultural Passport program.

Additionally, this season Culture Shock Miami will sponsor dance performances by Dimensions Dance Theater of Miami, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Farruquito, Ballet Hispánico; theatrical productions of Rent, Legally Blonde, Martha Redbone’s Bone Hill; and Zoppé, an Italian Family Circus with South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center.

Culture Shock Miami will also partner with the Department of Cultural Affairs’ All Kids Included initiative to sponsor a performance by international break dance crew ILL-ABILITIES as well as the annual All Kids Included Family Arts Festival.

Culture Shock Miami Presents 2018-2019 Season

• Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom (Oct. 6, 2018) tells the true story of Lynda Blackmon Lowery, one of the youngest participants in the Selma to Montgomery march in 1965, who was jailed nine times before her fifteenth birthday. Lowery fought alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. for the right to vote. Presented by Culture Shock Miami at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. Tickets on sale August 14.
• Mayumana - Currents (Feb. 15, 2019) is inspired by the historical battle between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla in their quest for finding energy sources for the world. It combines a variety of elements: specially made musical instruments, massive video art projections including video mapping on the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, and eleven skilled performers playing on different instruments in constant movement. Presented by Culture Shock Miami at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. Tickets on sale September 4.
• Into America (May 10, 2019) traces the American immigrant experience through the stories of ordinary men, women and children who departed their homelands in the hopes of creating a new life. It is the extraordinary story 400 years in the making that transcends time, space and race to reflect the diversity and commonalities of our shared American experience. Presented by Culture Shock Miami at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium. Tickets on sale September 4.

In addition to its Culture Shock Miami Presents series, the program also offers tickets to a wide range of cultural experiences at local museums, attractions, and performing arts centers throughout Miami-Dade County.

More than 100,000 tickets have been sold through Culture Shock Miami since launching in 2004.
