New exhibition explores pop-sensibilities of South Florida’s urban art

The Frank art gallery in Pembroke Pines presents “Hustle,” a collection of work exploring the pop-sensibilities of South Florida’s urban art with an emphasis on process, labor and work. Hustle is on display fromSeptember 6 through October 27.

The opening reception for Hustle begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 6 and is free and open to the public. In addition to the amazing artwork, guests also will enjoy a special spoken word performance by Darius V. Daughtry, founder and director of the Art Prevails Project.

Curated by The Frank’s Chief Curator Joshua Carden and ArtServe’s Curator Colette Mello, Hustle combines the pure colors and imagery of pop-art with the grit, energy and social undertones of street art. Featuring artists from Laundromat Art Space and ArtServe, the exhibition explores the physical and psychological marks of progress, development and growth through a contemporary pop-art lens.

“This exhibition will bring South Florida’s urban art scene to life in ways we don’t always see or think about immediately,” said Carden. “Hustle features incredible artists from all around the world, each bringing their unique insight and experience to the show.”

Among the artists participating in the exhibition are:

Cey Adams, http://ceyadams.com/, who draws inspiration from 60’s pop art, sign painting, comic books and popular culture. His work focuses on themes including pop culture, race and gender relations, cultural and community issues.

Luis Berros, http://www.luisberros.com/, who through his work, attempts to capture the moment where one point of view finds its opposite and discovers compliments, and indeed, a completeness, that was absent just a moment before.

CLoD, https://www.saatchiart.com/clodclod,or Venezuelan artist Claudia Echeverriìa, is best known for her whimsical abstract images that depict a world we can only visit through our imagination.

George Gadson, http://www.georgegadsonstudios.com/home, whose works express different aspects and values of life, with an underlying spiritual message that seeks to reconnect the human spirit with its creator.

Marina Gonella, https://www.marinagonella.com/, whose work is about the psychological influence of the surroundings and the relationship between place and identity.

Andre Martinez, https://www.laundromatartspace.com/andres-martinez, who creates a series of works that are saturated with obviousness, mental inertia, clichés and bad jokes, that reflect his mixed heritage and questions the profound meaning and superficial aesthetic appearance of everyday images.

David McCauley, https://www.artlifting.com/collections/david-mccauley, who began creating art to help him cope with the challenges of paralysis and to help him heal after sustaining a spinal cord injury that impaired his hand usage and paralyzed him from the chest down.

Rogerio Pedro, http://www.rogeriopedro.art.br/,who was influenced by the Modernist Movement and its aspects, especially cubism, which merges with the irreverence of a painter who does not fear color, who walks through the deconstruction of forms, volumes and concepts, and then re-establishes unique and identity-filled works.

Sterling Rook, http://www.sterlingrook.com/, whose multi-disciplinary practice investigates various artistic mediums to uncover cultural trends and the fabric of reality.

Ronald Sanchez, https://www.rsanchezart.com/, who uses conceptualism and visual poetry in his work incorporating an eclectic assortment of surfaces as his canvas. He brings new life to otherwise overlooked items from everyday life.
