Liam McGovern Joins Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida

7/26/18

Coast to Coast Legal Aid South Florida (CCLA) is pleased to welcome Liam McGivern to the Supportive Service for Veteran Families (SSVF) team. The program is funded by Mission United and assists low income families who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless to remove legal barriers to obtaining and maintaining stable housing. Mission United is a United Way of Broward County program, funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, designed to prevent and end veteran homelessness.

Prior to working with CCLA, McGivern worked in Seattle as a Civil Rights Analyst. There he investigated allegations of discrimination in housing, public accommodations and employment within the City of Seattle.

During law school and immediately after graduation, McGivern worked with Legal Services of Greater Miami representing low-income and homeless veterans. Even though his family is from Seattle, he had a desire to return to this kind of nonprofit legal work. Opportunity struck in South Florida. “My work in Seattle was very different, and I missed being an advocate for people who needed it,” said McGivern. “I find this kind of work to be a lot more satisfying.”

McGivern earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and his JD from the University of Miami School of Law, Magna Cum Laude. He is admitted to both the Florida Bar and the Washington Bar. McGivern is also VA accredited and admitted to practice in the court of appeals for veteran’s claims.
