The Association of Poinciana Villages (APV), Florida’s largest homeowners association, is proud to announce that Mark Maldonado, General Manager of APV, was recognized with the Founders Award from Solivita-Poinciana Volunteers United for his work to help create the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at APV. Also honored with the award was Ann Branford, who worked with Maldonado to create the program and has run it for the past four years. The two received special Founders Award certificates at the ESL Achievement Celebration at the APV Community Center.
Maldonado and Branford co-created the ESL program in 2014. Since then, the ESL program has served hundreds of Poinciana residents who have moved to Central Florida from destinations across the globe.
“Part of our mission to make Poinciana one of the best places to live in all of Central Florida is to make all of our residents, both longtime and newcomers, feel welcome and included. It’s hard enough moving to a new area, especially if you don’t have a full understanding of the language or the culture,” said Maldonado. “We have received tremendous feedback from those who have participated in the ESL program and hope it will help Poinciana residents for many years to come.”
Solivita-Poinciana Volunteers United is an informal group of unpaid volunteers from Solivita and Poinciana who provide free English lessons and acculturation information in cooperation with the Association of Poinciana Villages.
