Fern Fodiman, President of H.O.W. Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Valerie Goldfein has joined its Board.

Valerie Goldfein grew up in Lawrence, New York and graduated from Finch College. She was an advertising editor at Art Gallery Magazine and a volunteer on many committees including rebuilding a playground at the Mount Sinai Surgical ICU and served on the Pediatric Pulmonary Board as well as Capital Campaign co-chair for the Ethical Culture School.

In 1996 Valerie joined the Mount Sinai Auxiliary Board where she served as corresponding secretary, vice president and liaison to several programs.

Valerie was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer and felt the isolation that accompanies this disease. In an effort to rectify this situation, Valerie founded Woman to Woman, a program which is committed to providing support for women coping with a diagnosis of gynecological cancers. Woman to Woman, which began at Mount Sinai has been implemented in twenty-nine hospitals nationwide under the auspices of OCRF.Valerie has been the recipient of several honors including the United Hospital Funds Auxilian Award; the American Philanthropy Foundation; New Yorker of the week and most recently was named a New York Times New Yorker of the year.

Valerie has been married to Robert Goldfein for over fifty years. They reside in New York and Palm Beach. They have three children and five grandchildren.

H.O.W. (Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper) raises money to support basic or translational research in ovarian cancer through the Jacquie Liggett Research Fellowship. Women with ovarian cancer experiencing financial need are helped through the Jacquie Liggett Angel Fund. H.O.W. is dedicated to promoting awareness and recent advances in ovarian cancer by presenting educational programs to women primarily in our area. H.O.W. also provides scholarships to medical students interested in gynecologic oncology by working with a Gynecologic Oncologist during their elective time in medical school through the Dr. Robert C. Knapp Medical Student Award.
