Event is part of new partnership between Cancer Alliance of Help & Hope and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Cancer Alliance of Help & Hope (CAHH) has long been dedicated to supporting those affected by cancer. Now, they are taking that support one step further with a new partnership with the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. As a part of this new partnership, CAHH will welcome five of the leading cancer center’s researchers to share highlights of their work and what it means for the future of treatment for cancer patients at a special symposium.

The symposium will be held at 5:45. on January 17, 2017, at The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, and will feature experts from the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Deerfield Beach – Dr. Stephen Nimer, Director of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center; Dr. Ronan Swords, Professor in Leukemia; Dr. Alejandra Perez, Breast Program Director; and Dr. Brian Slomovitz, Gynecologic Oncology.

Each expert will address advancements in their respective areas of research and relate it to the care offered at Sylvester, which is one of anelite group of 11 cancer centers in the nation, according to a recent studypublished in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study included MD Anderson and Memorial Sloan Kettering, along with Sylvester, ascenters that achieved the best outcomes for cancer patients.

“Sylvester’s scientists are working on a range of leading-edge research, including how to adapt the body’s immune system to fight cancer (immunotherapy), engineering viral oncolyticagents to target and destroy cancer calls (viral oncology) and developing personalized cancer treatments, based on a patient’s unique cancer,” shared Janet Levy, a recently named board member for the CAHH and supporter of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, whose priority is translating research breakthroughs into more effective treatments, conducts more clinical research than any other institution in South Florida and currently has more than 260 clinicaltrials currently underway. Their Phase I Clinical Trials Program is South Florida’s only academic Phase I testing center dedicated to drug development for cancer patients.

For the past thirteen years, the CAHH has assisted children, adults and families affected by cancer and the subsequent bills they acquire during the treatment and recovery process. Due to the high costs of cancer treatment and the severity of the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, many cancer patients suffer severe financial setbacks and difficulties resulting in their inability to continue their medical insurance, which pays for their ongoing treatments; maintain transportation to go to treatment, or pay for their housing and living expenses, leaving individuals and families without a place to live. The Cancer Alliance of Help and Hope offers assistance to qualified cancer patients inPalm Beach County to ease this burden.
