MACRA, Population Health Key Topics at Broad and Cassel Health Forum

9/21/16

MACRA. Population health. Compliance. Key issues facing today’s health care leaders were discussed at the recent Broad and Cassel Health Forum in Fort Lauderdale, which saw record attendance this year.

Now in its sixth year, the event featured a keynote presentation from The Advisory Board Company on the care transformation business model followed by panel discussions on MACRA, enforcement and compliance, and ACOs and population health.

Keynote presenter Fred Bayon with The Advisory Board Company offered an in-depth look at the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) and Medicare Advantage, highlighting the latter which offers a more attractive plan. According to research by The Advisory Board, Medicare Advantage enrollment will nearly double by 2025. He continued by highlighting other trends, including the shift by employers to self-funded plans. In 2015, more than 60 percent of covered workers were in self-funded plans.

Not surprisingly, the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), also known as Medicare payment reform, was a popular point of discussion. MACRA will possibly be more significant than the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Bayon noted during his keynote address.

The topic also was addressed by panelists Paul DeMuro, of counsel with Broad and Cassel; Michael Manna, SunTrust Bank; and Lanny Pauley, Performance Medical Management.

Broad and Cassel’s Gabriel Imperato, one of the first lawyers in the U.S. certified in health care compliance by the Health Care Compliance Association, led a panel on compliance with panelists Anne Branan, of counsel with Broad and Cassel; Benton Curtis, senior counsel with Broad and Cassel; and Kristen Lilly, PYA.

The forum concluded with a panel led by Broad and Cassel’s Heather Miller on ACOs and population health, looking at the social determinants of health. The panel featured David Koeninger, Millennium Physician Group; Derek Pauley, health care consultant; and José Szapocznik, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Sponsors for the Health Forum included Broward County Medical Association, Dade County Medical Association, Daszkal Bolton, Palm Beach County Medical Society, ProAssurance, PYA, South Florida Hospital and Healthcare Association, South Florida Hospital News, South Florida Medical Group Management Association, and SunTrust.
