The GRANDPerson of the Year Award for 2016 goes to former First Lady, Senator and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, in recognition of the powerful and positive impact her work has had on the lives of children and families.
The Sept/Oct issue of GRAND Magazine features an exclusive interview with Secretary Clinton. In recognition of National Grandparents Day, September 11, access to GRAND magazine is free at grandsub.com.
This award is the first-ever selection of GRANDPerson of the Year based on that individual's status as a grandparent and extraordinary lifetime achievements. Clinton's dedication to children and families began more than four decades ago with an internship to study the education and health needs of migrant workers. Since graduating from Yale Law School, her work has included studying the educational needs of children with disabilities for the Children's Defense Fund, co-founding Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, improving healthcare coverage nationwide through the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), introducing legislation to assist grandparents and other relatives taking over primary caretaker responsibilities for children, and her continued efforts for education, healthcare, and children's, women's and families' rights in the U.S. and in other parts of the world. More about accomplishments.
Hillary Clinton became a grandmother in October 2014 and again in June 2016.
Since the launch of GRAND in 2004, the magazine has highlighted the increasingly vital roles of today's grandparents, who now number more than 70 million in the US.
"Children and families must succeed if society is to succeed. Helping families have the tools and environment they need to thrive has been Hillary Clinton's lifelong passion," said GRAND's founder, Christine Crosby. "We could think of no grandparent whose career and accomplishments better represent today's engaged grandparents and the values we seek to promote through the magazine and the GRANDPerson of the YearAward."
