Palmer Trinity School (PTS) alumna, and a recent graduate of Harvard University, Andrea Ortiz, has received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant to Mexico from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Ortiz, who received a Bachelor of Arts degree in social studies, specializing in Latin American studies, will spend nine months in the Mexican cities of Puebla and Guanajuato studying the impact of having a family member emigrate to the U.S. or another country.

Ortiz is one of more than 1,900 U.S. citizens who will teach, conduct research and provide expertise abroad for the 2016-2017 academic year. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievements as well as their record of service and demonstrated leadership in their respective fields.

“It is always gratifying and a source of pride to see what our students have accomplished after graduating from our School. We are not only proud of Andrea’s academic success, but that she has embraced our mission regarding global citizenship and social justice,” said Mark Hayes, English Department Chair at PTS.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to build relations between the peoples of the United States and other countries in order to work together in solving global challenges.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the program’s establishment in 1946 under legislation introduced by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. Since then, the program has given more than 360,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists and scientists the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
