Free Breakfast and Lunch is Available to All Children Under the Age of 18
Who/What: In its continuing commitment to serve the community, Broward County Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services (BCPSFNS) has expanded its services to include Sunday meals in its Thursday distribution effective immediately. The free grab-and-go meals are available to ALL children 18 years and younger – regardless of eligibility status – whether they’re engaged in face-to-face learning, eLearning and even if they don’t attend a Broward County Public School (BCPS).
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has extended the summer meals flexibility waiver, which allows BCPSFNS to provide breakfast and lunch at no cost to all children who meet the age requirement.
BCPSFNS will now provide breakfast and lunch for Sunday in its meal bundles, which are included in Thursday’s meal distribution, for a total of 14 meals per week (7 breakfast, 7 lunch total). All meal bundles on Thursdays will now include Sunday meals.
All children, whether they’re engaged in face-to-face learning, eLearning, and even if they don’t attend a Broward County Public School (BCPS) are encouraged to take advantage of the meal bundles.
How: Children or their parents will be able to pick up multiple meals at a time by walking or driving to the car or bus loop to reduce risk of exposure. If the child is not present, the USDA requires parents to provide identification for their child to pick up meals. The recommended forms of identification include student ID, report card or birth certificate, and the ID must be presented at each meal service.
Meals are provided in bundles and are not available for individual meal purchase. Adults are welcome to purchase meal bundles for $1.80 per breakfast and $2.75 per lunch.
When: The meals will be distributed at all designated BCPS elementary, middle and high schools. Meal distribution times vary between school locations during the school day; visit www.browardschools.com/food-service, call 211, or contact a school near you for individual service time.
In an effort to increase access to meals, select high schools will be open for meal distribution every Tuesday and Thursday, from 4 – 5 p.m. Sunday meals will be included in the Thursday distribution only.
