Centered on a message of hope, United Way of Miami-Dade is the beneficiary of a major donation from philanthropist and novelist MacKenzie Scott, to advance its work in building a stronger and equitable Miami. Among a cadre of 384 nonprofits receiving funds, this is the organization’s single largest donation in its 96-year history. In her blog post on Medium, Scott affirms these philanthropic investments are part of her pledge to address long-term systemic inequities and the economic effects that have been deepened by the current pandemic crisis.
“We couldn’t be more grateful for MacKenzie Scott’s generosity and trust,” said Maria C. Alonso, president and chief executive officer, United Way of Miami-Dade. “We are humbled by her vote of confidence in our work and look forward to collaborating with our trusted partners to determine the most meaningful and best use of this investment to deliver long-lasting impact in our community.”
Scott’s donation comes at a critical time, as we continue to respond to Miami’s needs and demands for services due to the heightened social and economic upheaval triggered by the coronavirus pandemic. Prior to this crisis, more than 5 out of 10 households (54%) in Miami-Dade County were living in, or one emergency away from, poverty, the pandemic has exacerbated an already difficult situation for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) individuals and families.*
According to Scott, of the 6,490 organizations examined by her team who sought perspective from hundreds of experts, funders and community leaders, our United Way was selected after their data-driven research confirmed strong leadership teams and results in addressing high projected food insecurity, high measure of racial inequity, high local poverty rates and low access to philanthropic capital. Scott further states, these “384 carefully selected teams have dedicated their lives to helping others, working and volunteering and serving real people face-to-face…day after day after day.”**
For over 96 years, United Way of Miami-Dade alongside its nonprofit and community partners has worked to create a community where everyone has the opportunities to thrive. By embracing diversity, bridging socioeconomic gaps and bringing the Miami community together to care for one another. Scott’s transformational gift in support of our work is a testament that she believes in United Way of Miami-Dade, the leadership of our board and the meaningful work of our staff, partners and volunteers.
