Elizabeth Duermit-Moreau and Matthew Schumm

Applications are now being accepted for 2021

The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the seas, supporting groundbreaking research and helping foster the next generation of ocean conservationists, has awarded a Guy Harvey Scholarship to two doctoral students from prestigious universities in Florida.

Each of the 2020 Guy Harvey Scholarship Award recipients received $5,000:

Elizabeth Duermit-Moreau, from Cincinnati, is a Ph.D. candidate at University of Florida studying fisheries and aquatic sciences. Her research is focused on how both Florida spiny lobster and stone crab habitat degradation and fishing impact parasite/disease prevalence in these species.

Matthew Schumm, from Chicago, is a Ph.D. candidate at Florida State University studying ecology and evolutionary biology. His research focuses on how environmental variability and change interact with the impact that harvesting can have on a population's growth and genetic diversity. This is achieved by using computer modeling and data analysis, as well as some simulated harvest experiments with poeciliid fish.

The scholarship supports each student’s individual academic programs. They also each receive a certificate designed and signed by world-renowned marine wildlife artist, biologist and conservationist Dr. Guy Harvey.

“As part of GHOF’s ongoing investment in higher education, we are thrilled to continue to support aspiring researchers, marine biologists and ocean conservationists,” said Dr. Harvey. “Elizabeth and Matthew are among the new generation of researchers that are stewards of the sea. The work they do is significant and will have a lasting impact on marine life.”

Established in 2010 through a partnership between Florida Sea Grant and the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, the Guy Harvey Scholarship Award recognizes graduate students at Florida universities whose research focuses on the biology, ecology, habitat or management of fish in Florida’s marine environment. Since its inception, 66 students have received more than $300,000 in scholarships.

About Guy Harvey: Guy Harvey is a unique blend of artist, scientist, diver, angler, conservationist, explorer and entrepreneur, fiercely devoted to his family and his love of the sea. His childhood passion for the ocean and its living creatures not only inspired him to draw but fueled a burning interest that prompted a formal education in marine science. Having graduated with honors in Marine Biology from Aberdeen University in Scotland in 1977, Guy returned home to Jamaica to resume his education, earning his Ph.D. from the University of the West Indies in 1984. Though he gave up a budding career as a marine biologist for that of a highly acclaimed artist, Guy has continued his relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries of the sea, traveling the world to better understand the habits and habitats of the marine wildlife he paints.
