Good news for Latin music lovers: Dancing just got the go-ahead at the Drive-In At The Fair thanks to the late Guarachera de Cuba,Celia Cruz, and her fellow Fania All-Stars.
In an exclusive showing this Friday night, venue organizer 3FEO Entertainment will air “Fania All-Stars: Live in Africa” - the 53-minute film about the New York City-based salsa band’s concert in Zaire in 1974, showcasing the Cuban chanteuse speaking Spanish and French to an audience of 80,000+ and belting fan-favorites like “Quimbara” alongside Johnny Pacheco, Héctor Lavoe, Santos Colon, Cheo Feliciano, Larry Harlow, Bobby Valentin, Ray Barretto and other All-Star virtuosos.
Miami-Dade County is adding a welcome dose of azucar by granting permission to event-goers to exit their cars - while remaining socially distanced within their assigned parking spaces - in order to dance.
“Celia Cruz taught us thatla vida es un carnaval - life is a carnival - and we are proud to offer Miami a way to gather and celebrate our blessings together during these challenging times,” said George Cabrera, President and CEO of 3FEO Entertainment. “Salsa is a part of our city’s heart and soul, and this historic concert will surely transport us to that incredible moment in 1974.”
The vintage performance was part of Zaire 74, a three-day, live-music festival designed to celebrate sports and entertainment in the African country (now Democratic Republic of Congo) while also promoting racial and cultural solidarity between Africans and African-Americans. Fania All-stars was one of 31 groups that performed, in company with James Brown, B.B. King. Bill Withers and others. Award-winning director Leon Gast filmed the concert.
Tickets start at $15 per person, free for kids ages 15 and under.
