College to work with students to accept credits for classes they have satisfactorily completed

Broward College has announced a program to help students at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale (AIFL) complete their studies and earn a degree following the announcement by AIFL’s parent company that campus-based programs would be discontinued in South Florida.

Students in AIFL programs in visual design, interior design, film and production, fashion, marketing, and hospitality management would be accepted into Broward College programs in graphic design, film production, architecture, hospitality management and general education courses. Students currently enrolled in the AIFL culinary arts program would complete their technical coursework at one of the College’s partner institutions and general education requirements at Broward College to earn the degree.

Credits for many entry-level courses will be a direct transfer while others will be evaluated for prior learning assessment and will require students to submit their final projects from the AIFL classes along with their transcript showing a grade of C or better. There will be no fee for the direct transfer of credits and a $90 per course fee for courses requiring the prior learning assessment review.

“These students have worked hard and Broward College wants to help remove any obstacles that would deter them from pursuing their degrees,” said Broward College Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Services, Dr. Marielena DeSanctis. “Students who receive direct transfer of credits andsuccessfully attain course credit through prior learning assessment evaluations may need as little as one semester’s study at Broward College to complete their degree program.”
