Young At Art Hosts 12th Annual Teen Comic Convention

Some of the world’s most famous comic, anime and action heroes will be in attendance, at least in costume, during the 12th Annual Young At Art Teen Comic Convention on Friday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Young At Art Museum, 751 S.W. 121 Ave. in Davie.

During Young At Art’sTeen Comic Convention, teen comic artreprenuers will display and sell their colorful cartoon artwork, Emmy Award-winning cartoonist Rob Cabrera will host one of the artist demonstrations from 1:30 to 2 p.m. and video gaming stations will encourage gamers to play everything from The New Star Wars Legos “Force Awakens” to hundreds of retro games and everything in between. Visitors will vie for prizes during the timed Quick Draw Contest and Name that Toon. Among the other festivities planned throughout the day are a family-friendly Cosplay Fashion Show, art demonstrations, digital film screenings and vendor stations.

In advance pf Teen Comic Con, on Tuesday, July 17th at 11 a.m., Young At Art will host a workshop on character development led by long-time YAA Teen Comic Con artist Hailee Bergman. The workshop is free with paid admission.

“We are bringing Comic Con to life as only Young At Art Museum can. Where else can you attend a family friendly Comic Con where the main attraction is incredible teen artists?,” said Marie Berlin, Director of the YAA Art Institute. “Twelve years ago we started with only a few teens and now we have more than 40. YAA’s Teen Comic Convention has become a favorite in our community to collect original fan art.”

Event activities for the entire family include:

  • Teen Comic Artists Showcasing and Selling Artwork from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Art entrepreneurs ages 13-18 will showcase and sell their artistic creations and have their work judged by local artists and comic professionals.
  • Video gaming stations throughout the museum, provided by PartyGameTime.com willincludes “Super Smash Brothers”, “Marvel Superheroes” “Mario Kart”, Mindcraft, The New Star Wars Legos “Force Awakens” and a time warp where gamers can choose from hundreds of different retro games.
  • Center Stage
  • Demonstrations, contests and art throughout the day
  • Digital film screening written and produced by Rob Cabrera & CampYAA digital art & film campers
  • Quick Draw Contest from 11 a.m. to noon - elementary, middle and high school students create art in a timed contest
  • “Name that Toon” - contestants play against each other for prizes as they try to guess the cartoon from hearing the theme song
  • Cosplay Fashion Show

Visitors dressed in their favorite comic, anime or action hero (G-rated costumes and no full facemasks) will participate in the show. Guests who wear costumes receive $4 off admission.

Admission to the Teen Comic Convention is included with admission to Young At Art
