Broward College Emil Buehler Aviation Students and Aerospace Maintenance Club Members Win Prestigious Aviation Industry Awards

Broward College’s top performing Emil Buehler Aviation Institute students and members of the Aerospace Maintenance Club (AMC) competed in the 2018 Aerospace Maintenance Competition at MRO Americas, held April 10-12 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Team members won three First Place awards for individual events and a national Third Place award.

Broward College sent two teams, each comprised of five AMC students and one faculty advisor, to compete to against 26 educational institutions from around the country and 43 teams from around the world representing commercial airlines, repair and manufacturing companies, general aviation and space organizations. Teams faced off in events ranging from electrical troubleshooting, to removal and reinstallation of components on turbine engines, to knowledge-based written tests.

“It was thrilling to watch Broward College’s Aerospace Maintenance Club students showcase their technical and professional skills to industry giants from all over the world,” said Oscar Romo, President, Aerospace Maintenance Club, Broward College. “Our two teams not only took home several awards, they also made invaluable industry connections and were introduced numerous recruitment opportunities.”

Broward College Team 1 earned the United Airlines Professionalism Award given to the team with the most outstanding display of professionalism throughout the competition and a $1,500 cash prize. Also winning as Third Place overall in the Educational Institution Category and First Place in two individual events, the Eastern Florida State College Space Vehicle/Vacuum Loading Operation and the FedEx Express Turbine Engine competition.

Broward College Team 2, led by Andres Martinez Broward College’s second faculty advisor, won the Airbus Cat III Certification individual event. Upon graduation, the winning student will be certified to work on EASA Airbus A320 aircraft anywhere in the world.

Broward College’s Emil Buehler Aviation Institute is recognized as one of the top Part 147 Aviation Maintenance Technician School’s in the country. For the past three years, the AMC has provided members and students in the Aviation Maintenance program the opportunity for hands-on practice to supplement skills taught in the classrooms which are necessary to further their careers.
