Business for the Arts of Broward Announces Featured Artist and Image for 4th Annual Art & Soul

3/26/18

Business for the Arts of Broward (BFA) has picked portrait painter Genie Appel-Cohen and her piece Walk With Me as the featured artist and image for the 4th annual 4th Annual Art & Soul, taking place on Friday, April 27 at GALLERYone DoubleTree Suites by Hilton in Fort Lauderdale.

An award winning painter and workshop director, Appel-Cohen’s work has been exhibited in The Tate Gallery in London, England, and was one of only 30 artists nationwide to be invited by The U.S. Department of Interior to paint en plein air in Montana’s National Parks. Her art was published in the book “An Invitation to Prayer,” written by Rabbi Shoni Labowitz. In addition, she was featured on the cover of City Link Magazine, as one of the most unforgettable artists of the year.

“When I think back on the peak moments of my life; those are the times when I have a deep spiritual connection to the natural world around me,” said Appel-Cohen when speaking about Walk With Me – her featured image at Art & Soul. The inspiration for the painting came from gazing at a tall grass path in North Dakota. “The colors peaked just as the sun was going down. Gathering my painting supplies, I turned one last time to remember that amazing view,” added Appel-Cohen.

Appel-Cohen is also a member several art associations and societies such as The National Association of Women Artists, The Colored Pencil Society of America, The Potrait Society of America, The National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic, and The National Acrylic Painter’s Association in the U.K. She has done corporate collections for The Prudential Insurance Company, The Hormel Meat Company and Platinum Luxury Auctions.

Appel-Cohen currently teaches painting and colored pencil drawing at the Coral Springs Museum of Art and the Boca Museum Art School in Florida. She lives in Pompano Beach with her husband, Philip. For more information on her work, visit artbyappel.net.

Art & Soul takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 27. Tickets are priced at $50-$60. For more information on the event, please visit bfabroward.org, or contact Robyn Vegas at rvegas@bfabroward.org.
