Broward Education Foundation Announces Stoneman Douglas Victims Fund Steering Committee Members

100% of funds raised benefit victims’ families, survivors and those impacted

Broward Education Foundation, the 501(c)3 that solely supports Broward County Public Schools, today announced the members of the steering committee, to be led by former U.S. SenatorGeorge LeMieux, that will beresponsible for setting the distribution policy for fundscollected through the Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund.

During a press conference, LeMieux, chairman of the board ofGunster Law Firm, announced the list of community, business and civic leaders who will volunteer their time on the steering committee. The list of steering committee members can be found at

“The steering committee will work closely with the National Center for Victims of Crime to establish a series of protocols and timelines for distributing the funds and we will then take public commentduring a town hall,” said LeMieux. “We take this responsibility very seriously and are committed to doing what is right for all involved.”

The National Center for Victims of Crime has assisted victims of many recent tragedies, including Aurora, Charlottesville, Orlando and Las Vegas.

“Unfortunately, this is not the first time a steering committee has had to be established to distribute funds in the wake of a horrific tragedy, but this committee is important so that we can ensure that 100 percent of the funds go to the victims in a fair manner,” said Christina Fischer, Broward Education Foundation Board Chair. “We are very fortunate to have George as the chair and to have dedicated steering committee members who are volunteering their time, resources and expertise. Our goal is to help the victims and families as much as possible and as quickly, efficiently and fairly as possible.”

Donations will be accepted through June 30 with distributions taking place in July. “I have personally met with many of the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” said Shea Ciriago, executive director of Broward Education Foundation. “We can’t change what has happened. I wish we could. What we can do is continue to diligently fundraise for the victims and their families.
