Andrew J. Garnett, president/CEO of Special Needs Group® / Special Needs at Sea® , the leading global provider of special needs equipment rentals, has donated $500 to sponsor the Kindergarten Class Garden at Central Park Elementary School after its grant was not awarded.
Garnett’s son Alec is a Kindergarten student there. When he found out that there wasn’t going to be a garden this year, he told his parents, “We have to have a garden. It’s not Kindergarten without a garden.”
With the blessing of intern Principal Susana Deutsch, Garnett donated the cost to cover the garden and recruited several parents and teachers to clear the area. Planting will begin on Thursday, March 9from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Kindergarten students will be available for comment.
“Learning through a book or on a computer is fine, but it is not a replacement for true hands-on experience,” said Garnett. “Through my business, we meet people every day who think their special need or disability precludes them from enjoying life. Once they realize our special needs equipment enables them to explore the world, they let us know how grateful they are that we have made the world a bigger place for them. It doesn’t take much to make this gardening project happen and it’s important so that future classes will also have the opportunity to experience it for themselves.”
According to Principal Deutsch, “The learning that takes place with the Kindergarten Class Garden is priceless.”
The students will be growing all of the ingredients to make salsa. They will also learn nutrition benefits and the importance of eating well. In addition, they will be learning about the following.
1. Photosynthesis
2. Life Cycles – Both Plants and Butterflies
3. How to plant their own garden
4. How to cook with fresh ingredients
5. Nutrition
6. Teamwork
