FLIPANY Provides Power Snacks at Aftercare Programs Not Located in Schools
to Increase Daily Service to 6,400 Children Per Day

Supplementing nutritional needs in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties for students who attend aftercare outside of the public school system and adults with disabilities, the non-profit organization FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth) introduced its new PowerSnack menu on Feb. 1. The healthy, delicious food items are presented in a fun, bento box-style. Serving over 6,400 aftercare students per day (over 1 million meals per year), FLIPANY operates in 115 locations in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, and anticipates additional growth in 2017 with the introduction of PowerSnacks.

The City of Miami kicked off FLIPANY’s PowerSnacks program, which includes healthy offerings such as chicken kabobs, bean dippers, turkey & green wraps, cobb salad, seed butter & banana crisps, turkey stacker, tuna salad slicers, and much more. The bento box-style presentation, including five components as opposed to the standard two-snack components, offers students a new, ethnically diverse menu, easy-to-serve, compartmentalized trays. This provides ease of operation for the after school site staff to ensure all kids have access to healthy food outside of school.

FLIPANY’s PowerSnack program is federally funded and approved through the Florida Department of Health Child Care Food Program. Once the aftercare site is approved for the program, the snacks are provided at no cost to the site. FLIPANY receives funding from many sources including The Children’s Trust, Lucky’s Markets, and the City of Miami to administer the program.

“By offering our new Power Snacks to over 1,000 students in aftercare programs across Miami-Dade County and hoping to expand further into locations in Broward County, we are exposing them to different, healthy foods, that are tasty and easy to serve; ensuring kids receive the nutrients they need to learn, grow and thrive,” said FLIPANY President, CEO and Founder Lynne Kunins. “We are happy to provide students who are in non-school aftercare programs the opportunity to enjoy wholesome, flavorful foods, and help them to establish healthy habits for life.”

Kunins founded FLIPANY in 2005 to educate and empower youth and adults through nutrition and physical activity programs, while influencing policy changes for healthier communities. Today, FLIPANY provides eight different health and wellness programs to Florida residents.
