Nearly $65,000raised to fund mammograms for underserved women in Broward County

With a focus on breast cancer awareness, the Holy Cross Hospital Women Owning Wellness (WOW!) committee hosted its ninth annual This One’s for the Girls! Luncheon, which raised nearly $65,000 for the non-profit hospital’s Partners in Breast Health program.

Proceeds from the event will provide underserved women in Broward County with breast health education, health assessments and mammograms.

Studies show that underserved and uninsured women are more likely to die from breast cancer due to lack of screenings and late-stage diagnoses.

“Our Partners in Breast Health program is all about reversing those statistics,” said Holy Cross Hospital President and CEO Patrick A. Taylor, M.D. “We truly thank WOW!, our sponsors and our supporters for another successful luncheon. Together we can make great strides against breast cancer.”

During the luncheon, community leader Alice Jackson, a breast cancer survivor herself, gave a poignant speech asking guests to pay it forward by supporting breast health programs for the underserved and uninsured women in the community.

The luncheon kicked off with a reception highlighted by a specialty boutique area offering unique gifts, fashions and accessories. A raffle for gift certificates from local restaurants and other specialty items from the boutiques also added to the funds collected.

WOW! President Carolyn Huerkamp, Melissa Foster and Nicki Rowntree co-chaired the luncheon. Chairs Emeritus of WOW!,Monica Maroone and Sheri Whittington, and Chair Eternal Doreen Koenig led the charitable campaign that completely funded the $15 million Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center at Holy Cross HealthPlex.
