Taking place two weeks prior to Art Basel Miami Beach, the Fort Lauderdale Home Design and Remodeling Show will provide an opportunity for art lovers to get to know some South Florida artists and learn about events that will occur during and after the busy art season. “At Home with Art” is an artist encounter exhibit which aims to put the spotlight on local artists. The Home Show takes place November 18-20, 2016 at the Broward County Convention Center.
Through a submission process, applicants must present samples of their work, a biography and artist statement, as well as provide a paragraph stating why he/she is an “ambassador” for the local artist community.
“I believe I am a strong candidate for the At Home with Art showcase not only because my art emphasizes themes relating to South Florida culture, but also years working in public art studios has groomed me to interface well with the public,” states Carmen Smith a Hollywood based artist in her submission document. “I am very approachable, friendly, professional, resourceful and knowledgeable - but most of all, people feel comfortable asking me questions about art. Visitors often remark they have attended art events, shows, and studios, but rarely leave with as deep a connection to the artist and the artist's ideas.”
Carmen Smith exhibits a sample of her work along with 15 other artists. Artists form teams of two or three artists who curate a 10x20 space. The six spaces are grouped together to make one large exhibition area that is located close to the Show’s Interior Designer room vignettes. Three teams will curate a space aimed to create awareness of non-profit organizations: Grace Arts Center, Weston Art Guild, and the Humane Society of Broward County.
This year’s selected artist teams are:
(1) Paola Gallardo and Diana Pantoja; (2) Felicia Fish, Lena Luckey, Glen Mayo, and Annie Melik representing the Grace Arts Center curated by Clare Vickery; (3) Lisa Botto Lee, Melanie Margolies, and Susan Gillingham representing the Weston Art Guild; (4) Phoenix Marks and Jen Walls representing the Humane Society of Broward County; (5) Hilma Koelman and Carmen Smith; and (6) Grisell Gajano, Claire Satin, and Erika Zalez.
