Michael Freedland, Esq. and Daniel Harwin, Esq., founding partners of Fort Lauderdale-based Freedland Harwin Valori Ryan, PL, are pleased to announce that Mike Ryan, Esq. has joined the firm as a partner. Ryan, a prominent longtime South Florida attorney and civic leader, focuses on local trial practice and has also distinguished himself in local and national litigation involving medical malpractice, catastrophic injuries, medical devices, products liability, and pharmaceutical products.

Since Ryan has joined the firm, Freedland and Harwin have updated its name from Freedland Harwin Valori, PL to Freedland Harwin Valori Ryan, PL.

Ryan joins the firm after leaving Fort Lauderdale civil litigation firm Krupnick Campbell Malone Buser Slama Hancock, where he was a partner. He served at the firm since 1997, and was the trial lawyer on the team of partners obtaining some of the largest verdicts and settlements in Broward County and the State of Florida.

Prior to joining Krupnick Campbell Malone Buser Slama Hancock, Ryan worked as a law clerk for Federal District Judge Kenneth Ryskamp in the Southern District of Florida. Following his federal clerkship, he worked for three years as a trial attorney with the State Public Defender's Office before joining the Federal Public Defender's Office as a trial attorney.

He is actively involved as a member of the American Association for Justice, Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, The Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and the Broward County Trial Lawyers' Association. He has lectured around the country to lawyers and judges on the topic of electronic discovery, and has authored a number of articles on the topic of electronic discovery.

Ryan earned his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio, where he attended on a full tuition scholarship, graduated summa cum laude. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

In 2010, Ryan was elected the mayor of the City of Sunrise, an office he currently holds, and reelected in 2012, 2016 and 2020 without opposition. He has received numerous community awards for his work in the community including the 2019 Broward County Bar Association’s inaugural “Walter G. “Skip” Campbell, Jr. Lawyer–Public Servant Award”. He is a frequent author regarding matters of public importance.

Ryan is also an appointed member of the Broward County Regional Planning Council, Broward Behavioral Health Coalition and a current member of the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association Committee on Domestic Violence Injunction Process. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Women in Distress, and the Florida League of Mayors (2016–2019), as well as a member of the Florida League of Cities' Transportation and Intergovernmental Relations Committee.

He has served as chair (and prior vice-chair) of the Broward County Consolidated Communications Committee (regional emergency 911 communications), co-chair of the Communications Working Group for Strengthening Police-Community Relations, past chair and past vice-chair of the Public Safety Committee for the Broward League of Cities, and past co-chair of the Broward County League of Cities’ Joint School Resource Officers Task Force. After the horrific tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Ryan was appointed co-chair of the Broward County League of Cities’ School and Community Public Safety Task Force focused on identifying and implementing changes and strategies to enhance school and community safety.

His charitable works include running marathons for charity, helping gather goods and supplies to assist Haiti after the January 2010 earthquake, traveling to Haiti to volunteer after the earthquake, traveling overseas to volunteer at a U.S.O. Wounded Warrior Center, and a 900-mile bike ride to benefit, among others, wounded soldiers and their families. He is also an Advocate Level member of the League of American Bicyclists.

Ryan has been active in his community. He served as PTA president for two years and as an Executive Board officer for an additional two years with the Sawgrass Elementary PTA; as a volunteer coach over many years for youth soccer, baseball and flag football; as a volunteer coach for high school varsity girls soccer team, a Board member for Broward Behavioral Health Coalition, and two terms as chair of the Education Advisory Board for the City of Sunrise.

Born in Queens, New York, Ryan has been a resident of South Florida intermittently since 1977.
