John Johnson+ Holy Cross Award $25K in Grants to Local Charities

Holy Cross Hospital has awarded $25,000 in grants to three non-profit organizations that focus on funding food security initiatives in South Florida.

The Holy Cross Hospital food security grants are presented annually in honor of John C. Johnson, president emeritus and former chief executive officer of Holy Cross. Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center (CDTC), Mobile School Pantry and LifeNet4Families all received grants this year.

“At Holy Cross, we believe that no man, woman or child should ever go hungry,” said Sister Rita Levasseur, the non-profit hospital's vice president of mission integration. “We are grateful that we can partner with these dedicated charities to help ensure that families, children and the elderly in our community have access to the food they need.”

For over 30 years, LifeNet4Families has provided service to the hungry and homeless in Broward Country. The non-profit has grown tremendously during that time, from distributing a few peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the beginning to providing well over 90,000 meals a year today. LifeNet4Families received $12,800 from Holy Cross to support its programming.

Founded in 2013, the Mobile School Pantry’s mission is to provide nutritious, healthy grocery items to students’ families at low-income schools throughout South Florida. The $7,200 grant awarded to Mobile School Pantry will go towards providing healthy food supplies for over 600 families.

Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center was established in 1983 to promote the optimal health and well-being of children and youth with special healthcare needs. CDTC provides family-centered, comprehensive prevention, intervention and treatment services within a medical home environment. The $5,000 awarded to CDTC will support the organization’s food pantry.

"Mr. Johnson has always strongly believed that every family has the undeniable right to access a sufficient food supply. I am pleased that these grants will help other organizations in the community who work with families towards achieving that goal,” said Holy Cross Hospital President and CEO Patrick A. Taylor, M.D. “We want to make sure that all those in need have enough food to live an active, healthy life.”
