Broward Health Community Health Services will be co-hosting on June 15 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. the Second Annual Get H.I.P., Get Tested Concert to screen and educate minority communities about HIV/AIDS. At the concert, African American, Caribbean and Latino men and their families will have access to confidential HIV testing and pre/post-test counseling.
This free event is extremely timely, as Science Magazine just released data indicating South Florida has the highest rate of new HIV diagnoses in the United States.
“The CDC recommends that everyone between the age of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of their routine health care,” said Trudy Love, a Broward Health outreach coordinator and coordinator of Get H.I.P. “People with high-risk factors, such as multiple sex partners, low condom usage and illicit drug use, should be tested more often.”
In addition to confidential free HIV testing, community resource providers will offer health coverage options and linkage to primary care. Participants will also receive giveaways and an exclusive opportunity to meet local world-renowned recording artist Ball Greezy.
Get H.I.P. is being held in collaboration with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Broward House, Black Treatment Advocate Network, the City of Fort Lauderdale, Gilead, and sponsored by Community Health. Screenings and the concert will take place at Joseph C. Carter Park, 1450 West Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.
“This is a positive event for our local community,” said Claudette Grant, site administrator of Broward Health’s Comprehensive Care Center. “We look forward to providing an opportunity for men and women, especially men of color, to become educated on HIV and the various treatment options available in a relaxed and enjoyable setting with their families.”
