Broward Health Medical Center has been recognized as a Blue Distinction® Center for adult liver donor transplant care, as part of Florida Blue’s Specialty Care program. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated hospitals that demonstrate expertise in delivering improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community.
In order to be named a Blue Distinction Center for transplants, hospitals must demonstrate success in meeting patient safety criteria as well as transplant-specific quality measures in one or more of the following transplant types: adult heart, adult lung, adult deceased donor liver, adult living donor liver, adult pancreas, pediatric heart, pediatric liver, or either adult or pediatric autologous/allogeneic bone marrow/stem cell transplant.
“This recognition is a testament to the expertise and dedication of our multidisciplinary transplant team,” said Broward Health President and CEO Beverly Capasso. “The caregivers of Broward Health are committed to providing access to the highest level of care and we are very proud to receive this prestigious designation.”
Broward Health Medical Center has performed liver transplants since February 2004, offering patients hope for a longer, more active life. The hospital provides adults with severe liver disease a care plan that is tailored to the needs of each individual patient in a dedicated unit offering state-of-the-art transplant care.
“We are honored to be included on this list of remarkable organizations providing exceptional care to transplant patients and will continue to provide this life-saving, quality service to patients across South Florida and beyond,” said Sandra Todd-Atkinson, RN, EdD, NEA-BC, Chief Executive Officer at Broward Health Medical Center.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies across the nation have recognized more than 130 hospitals as Blue Distinction Centers for Transplants. Blue Distinction Centers are assessed using a combination of publicly available quality information and cost measures derived from BCBS companies’ medical claims.

About Blue Distinction Centers
Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for providers located in its own service area; for details, contact your Local Blue Plan. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers’ need for affordable health care. Each provider’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Providers in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’ areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+ national criteria. National criteria for BDC and BDC+ are displayed on www.bcbs.com. Individual outcomes may vary. For details on a provider’s in-network status or your own policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan and ask your provider before making an appointment. Neither Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association nor any Blue Plans are responsible for non-covered charges or other losses or damages resulting from Blue Distinction or other provider finder information or care received from Blue Distinction or other providers.
