Dr. Ian del Conde-Pozzi
Dr. Ian del Conde-Pozzi is something of a pioneer in the field of vascular medicine. While other medical disciplines are centuries old, vascular medicine has only recently emerged as a specialty, most emphatically in the past 20 years. His fascination with the veins, vessels and lymphatics and how they impact health led him to become a fellowship-trained vascular medicine specialist. Dr. del Conde came to HeartWell, LLP from the Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute, where he headed up the Vascular Medicine program.
“We often refer to the field of heart healthcare as ‘cardiovascular’ medicine, but cardiologists concentrate on the heart itself, and the vascular system has long been left to the surgeons to focus on,” says Dr. del Conde. “Now, however, the field of vascular medicine has grown in scope and importance and the role that vessels play in heart health has been much more closely examined.”
Dr. del Conde’s credentials include fellowship training in vascular medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, and residency and internship in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston. With this experience, he has developed tremendous expertise in identifying and diagnosing vascular disorders. He routinely sees patients with peripheral artery disease, carotid and renal artery disease, pulmonary embolisms, deep vein thrombosis and a host of other syndromes that impact the heart but can be corrected by treatments and medication when swiftly diagnosed.
“Patients will see a cardiac surgeon when surgery is required, but there is no medical counterpart for vascular concerns,” he reports. “For a long time, patients were not well served when their issues centered on the vessels and arteries. The evolution of vascular medicine has made doctors and patients more aware of this branch of medicine and its overall effect on the body.” He says he gets referrals from primary care physicians that recognize that their patients can benefit from a vascular medicine specialist, and save them the anguish of possible surgery.
Dr. del Conde notes that there are not many vascular medicine specialists in the area, although the profession is attracting more physicians to this critical area than ever before. Patients whose diagnosis can best be treated by a doctor trained in vascular medicine had often fallen through the cracks prior to the growing understanding of the field.
His clinical expertise also involves the study and treatment of less common vascular diseases such as fibromuscular dysplasia, collagen vascular disorder and vasculitis.
Dr. del Conde completed fellowships in Cardiology and Vascular Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Vascular Medicine, and is an accredited Hypertension Specialist.
