Art as Amenity: American Landmark Apartments’ “Artist in Residence” Program Culminates In Gallery Exhibition

2/12/21

Visual artist Artem Mirolevich will display his work at the Denis Leon Gallery in Boca Raton from Thursday, February 10 through February 24.

Opening reception is Saturday, February 13 from 6 – 10 PM

The power of art transcends many challenges – witness the success of the American Landmark Apartments’ “Artist in Residence” Program during the COVID-19 crisis. Created to provide a unique resident amenity, the Artist in Residence program did just that and more: it provided residents a respite from isolation and gave them an opportunity to channel their inner creative.

The pilot program launched last year and offered an emerging visual artist no-cost housing and studio space for up to one year in exchange for art classes/events for residents of its Midtown 24 apartments in Plantation, Fla. Artem Mirolevich, a visual artist based in South Florida and New York City, was selected as the inaugural resident, and he began offering weekly classes for kids and adults, as well as regular “Drink and Draw” workshops with live models, in September.

“Art brings people together, and over time we’ve found that our residents value this aspect of community life more and more – unique activities are part of the overall amenity package that American Landmark communities offer,” said Joe Lubeck, CEO of American Landmark Apartments. “We initiated this program prior to the pandemic, and thanks to Artem and his family’s positive attitude, commitment and fine art teaching skills, the program was able to adapt and thrive.”

“I really enjoyed the experience of painting with Artem,” added Midtown 24 resident Julian Chacon. “It was actually very meditative and it helped me de-stress from the work day. Artem made me feel very comfortable and gave us a lot of freedom to make the painting our own. I’m obviously a horrible artist, but Artem never actually made me feel that way. Instead he encouraged me the entire way through.”

Building on this success, American Landmark Apartments will offer two Artist in Residence grants in 2021, at Midtown 24 and at one of its Tampa communities. Applications for the program are being accepted until April 1, 2021, and residencies will begin on June 1, 2021. Artists over the age of 18 who work in a variety of visual arts disciplines are welcome to apply, including muralists, large scale painters, public artists, mixed media artists, musicians and installation artists. About American Landmark’s Artist In Residence Program
The Artist in Residence program is the brainchild of Rachel Lubeck, an accomplished artist and permaculture professional, and Gladys Margarita Diaz, owner of Urbaniza Studio. Their vision was to create a residency in partnership with a leading multifamily property company that would engage art as a force to enrich the lives of residents. The result would be a company that was unique in community offerings within the multifamily space encouraging resident loyalty and providing a career opportunity for artists.

Lubeck has coordinated multiple art residencies and has a clear vision for the benefits that can be present for artists and community through innovative programs that provide housing relief and pathways for arts to flourish. Diaz is an architectural designer and real estate professional. Her company, Urbaniza Studio, consults property owners on urban development and hosts an online art gallery connecting the dots between art, architecture and property, and was recently selected as one of the top 75 Latina-owned businesses by the Ford Motor Company through their program “Ford Driving Dreams.”
