Four NSU freshmen received four-year scholarships to study science

Four freshmen at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) were the recipients of the inaugural Legacy Scholarship, four-year Florida University Plan scholarships offered by the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation (GHOF) and Florida Prepaid College Foundation(FPCF) to graduating high school seniors who reside in Florida and plan to attend Nova Southeastern University.

The scholarship recipients were:

Chad Walker, a resident of Loxahatchee majoring in public health science

Diana Phillips, from Largo, majoring in marine biology

Amar Singh, a resident of Plantation majoring in education and computer science

Nicole Castro, from Miami, majoring in biology

“The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation is a beacon for educating our youth about their role in protecting our marine resources. We are thrilled to partner with GHOF to provide match funding for four, 4-year Florida University Plan scholarships and for such awesome students!”, said Cindy O’Connell, director of the FPCF.

Each scholarship applicant submitted a 250-word essay explaining why they have a passion for marine science and conservation and what major threats to the oceans they plan to work on during their future career in ocean conservation. They will each write an annual review of their experience during college.

“All of the entries received by the GHOF were inspirational,” said Dr. Guy Harvey, world-renowned artist, conservationist, scientist and chairman/founder of the GHOF. “I wish we could have given scholarships to everyone, however, these four students are well deserving of these scholarship funds, and I look forward to seeing how they will help the marine ecosystem.”

The GHOF conducts scientific research and hosts educational programs aimed at conserving the marine environment and funds affiliated researchers working to better understand our ocean ecosystem and educators helping to foster the next era of marine conservationists. The GHOF will help ensure that future generations can enjoy and benefit from a properly balanced ocean ecosystem. For more information, visit www.GHOF.org.

About Guy Harvey: Guy Harvey is a unique blend of artist, scientist, diver, angler, conservationist, explorer and entrepreneur, fiercely devoted to his family and his love of the sea. His childhood passion for the ocean and its living creatures not only inspired him to draw but fueled a burning interest that prompted a formal education in marine science. Having graduated with honors in Marine Biology from Aberdeen University in Scotland in 1977, Guy returned home to Jamaica to resume his education, earning his Ph.D. from the University of the West Indies in 1984. Though he gave up a budding career as a marine biologist for that of a highly acclaimed artist, Guy has continued his relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries of the sea, traveling the world to better understand the habits and habitats of the marine wildlife he paints. About Florida Prepaid College Foundation: Since 1987, the Florida Prepaid College Board has offered families a means to save for their children and grandchildren’s future college expenses with the Florida Prepaid College Program and the Florida 529 Savings Plan. As the not-for-profit division of the Florida Prepaid College Board, the Florida Prepaid College Foundation offers an avenue for eligible organizations to purchase tax-deductible Florida Prepaid College Plan scholarships, and in many cases, leverage our funds for a dollar-for-dollar scholarship match. This allows donor and partner organizations to have a bigger impact within their community. This partnership model supports our goal of making college accessible for more Floridians. Scholarships are awarded to economically disadvantaged students who are at risk of dropping out of school, and to other deserving students in need of assistance.
