'Brighton Beach Memoirs' Presented at Levis JCC's West Boca Theatre Company

12/23/19

The Levis JCC Sandler Center continues its impressive 2019-2020 line-up at its black box stage theater with Brighton Beach Memoirs by West Boca Theatre Company. In Neil Simon’s comedy, Eugene dreams of baseball and girls, and must cope with the mundane existence of his family life. This hilarious play, served up Simon-style, runs from January 9 through January 19, 2020.

Brighton Beach Memoirs is the first account in Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical trilogy. Set in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, NY in September 1937 during The Great Depression, this coming of age comedy focuses on Eugene Morris Jerome, a Polish-Jewish American teenager who experiences puberty, sexual awakening, and a search for identity as he tries to deal with his family.

This bittersweet memoir eloquently captures the life of a struggling Jewish household including Jerome’s older brother Stanley, his parents Kate and Jack, Kate's sister Blanche, and her two daughters, Nora and Laurie, who come to live there after their father's death. The new living arrangement is taking its toll on Jack's health, as he has to work two stressful jobs to support the extended family. Meanwhile, Aunt Blanche is interested in dating their neighbor, who has a drinking problem, despite Kate's objections; Stanley faces problems with his own job, when he stands up to his somewhat tyrannical boss; cousin Nora, whom Eugene has a crush on, is eager to be a dancer in a Broadway musical, even though the family's circumstances might not allow it; and cousin Laurie, who has heart problems, is a source of annoyance for Eugene.

Showtimes for Brighton Beach Memoirs are at 2 pm and 7:30 pm on Thursday, January 9; 7:30 pm on Thursday, January 16; 7:30 pm on Saturdays, January 11 and 18; and 2 pm on Sundays, January 12 and 19. General Admission Seating is $30.
