Leading-Edge Technology

Holy Cross is the first in Broward County to offer a new leading-edge tool in the battle against lung cancer and it’s helping the hospital’s leading cancer experts diagnose the disease earlier when patients have the best prognosis. The technology, SPiN Thoracic Navigation System™ from Veran Medical, helps guide physicians through the lungs much like a GPS navigation system enabling physicians to detect and diagnose the smallest suspicious nodules earlier to guide rapid cancer treatment.

The SPiN Thoracic Navigation System takes ordinary CT scans and turns them into 3D virtual maps that physicians use for precisely targeting lesions and navigating the lungs. Procedures take approximately one hour and are typically performed in an outpatient setting. Clinical studies utilizing Veran’s technology have demonstrated diagnostic yields that exceed 90 percent. The SPiN System™ tracks movement and patient breathing 20 times per second to ensure physicians precisely locate moving targets. To ensure precision tracking of nodules during procedures, physicians use Veran’s Always-On Tip Tracked® instruments, which are equipped with tiny electromagnetic sensors that allows doctors to visualize step by step where they are within the lung straight through to the target. In addition, approximately 40 percent of nodules lie outside of airways.

Multidisciplinary Team

A multidisciplinary team provides a comprehensive approach that addresses prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. This team of physician specialists includes pulmonologists, medical and radiation oncologists, thoracic surgeons, radiologists and pathologists, all supported by a skilled and compassionate staff.

Holy Cross provides up-to-date treatment and care options for lung cancer by providing access to multiple clinical trials. A nurse navigator can assist with research study opportunities and provide supportive care from diagnosis through all phases of treatment. In addition, patients have the option of support groups, individual counseling and educational resources.
