Hey, Batter, Batter, Batter! How the Boys and Girls of Summer Can Prevent Strike Outs Due to Common Baseball Injuries

6/22/16

Baseball, the great America past time, is upon us and so is the potential for injuries among amateur and professional athletes alike. Take for example, the New York Mets, who this season have six players out due to orthopedic injuries. Baseball, regardless of your age or skill level, is physically demanding and injuries and can include rotator cuff strain, elbow damage, stress fractures, herniated disks and more.

Dr. Alejandro Badia, the CEO and Chief Medical Officer of OrthoNOW®, the nation’s only network of orthopedic urgent care centers, explains that “typically baseball players suffer overuse injuries that can be prevented. I cannot stress enough how important it is for ball players to seek expert orthopedic assessment at the time of even minor injuries. Batters, for example, often think they have a sprained wrist when they actually have a hook of hamate fracture like Miami Marlin’s Outfielder, Giancarlo Stanton suffered in 2015. I treated an FIU collegiate player recently who came quickly and he was in the batting cage 6 weeks after surgery!”

To help keep you in the batter’s box, Badia suggests incorporating these two simple tips into your training and game day routines”.

1.) Remember to warm up and stretch your body before and after a game. Three to five minutes before a game do different exercises like walking, running, jumping, etc. To cool off after a game, stretch muscles and hold each position for 30 seconds.

2.) Seek the assistance of a qualified trainer: Always train with a coach who will teach you the proper techniques, skills and movements. Knowing the right technique will work in your favor, not only in how to complete the game, but also how to implement the right moves to protect your body from injury.

So, now we know pain or injury will not keep you off your personal field of dreams if you consult immediately with a physician who specializes in orthopedic sports medicine or visit one of our many Greater Miami area OrthoNOW® Urgent Care Centers and experience less wait time, lower costs and a better outcome.
